If the composition of the soil is not known, a soil survey is the first step towards your dream sauna.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A soil survey<\/strong> <strong>can be commissioned from a professional<\/strong> or done yourself. Previous owners of the property can also give valuable information about the soil. The aim of the survey is to determine the soil's <strong>composition<\/strong>, <strong>load-bearing capacity<\/strong> and <strong>groundwater level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every type of soil behaves differently:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>in some, water drains down quickly,<\/li>\n<li>others retain moisture,<\/li>\n<li>some soil types are highly susceptible to frost heave,<\/li>\n<li>others hardly at all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Finland, it is precisely the behaviour of moisture and frost heave that pose the greatest risks to foundations. The power of nature is remarkable: frost heave shifts soil particles both vertically and sideways \u2013 even with a heavy building on top. That is why a wrongly chosen or poorly built foundation can result in the building sinking or its structures breaking.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ff0219 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ff0219\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Soil types and how they affect the choice of foundations.<\/h3>\n<p>The most common ways to lay the foundations for a cabin or garden sauna are ground screw, pier and lightweight foundations. Once the composition of the soil is known, the final choice can be made taking the other factors into account.<\/p>\n<p>A garden sauna or cabin is usually built on a ground screw or pier foundation; where the soil allows, a lightweight foundation is also an option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But how do you make the right choice? And how much do foundations cost?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will get the answers shortly, as next we give you easy-to-understand information on the three most common foundation types.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2141a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a2141a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"1.-Ruuvipaaluperustus\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>1. Ground screw foundation<\/h3>\n<p>A ground screw foundation is a newer alternative to a traditional concrete or block foundation. A ground screw, also called a screw pile, is a steel pile that is screwed into the ground below the frost line.<\/p>\n<p>Ground screws come in <strong>hand-turned<\/strong> lighter model that you can install yourself, and a heavier <strong>machine-installed<\/strong> model. You can hire the machine or buy the ground screws ready installed.<\/p>\n<p>A ground screw foundation <strong>does not require extensive earthworks<\/strong> and screws can also be installed in cramped, hard-to-reach sites and in damp soil, as long as the length of the ground screw is chosen correctly. The screw must be installed<strong> below the frost line<\/strong>, so that it stays in place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ground screws are not suitable for rocky or stony ground<\/strong>, as they are screwed into the soil, and larger stones prevent the screw from being installed. If you still want a ground screw foundation, you can have the stones at the screw positions removed with an excavator and replaced with more even soil. However, this is likely to cost more than, for example, a pier foundation.<\/p>\n<h4>Suitability:<\/h4>\n<p>+ Clay soil, silt, moraine<br \/>+ Suitable for all Ehta garden saunas, sauna cabins and cabins.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Not suitable for rocky or stony ground.<\/p>\n<h4>Construction:<\/h4>\n<p>+ Leaves no marks in the garden.<br \/>+ Can also be installed in winter.<br \/>+ A quick foundation type \u2013 no drying time.<br \/>+ The hand-installed model in particular is inexpensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 In some cases, can be more expensive than a pier foundation when installed by a professional.<\/p>\n<h4>Options and costs:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Hand-turned ground screws for self-installation are available at all hardware stores.\n<ul>\n<li>Price of the screws:<strong> 20-60\u20ac each.<\/strong><br \/>(Remember to choose a screw long enough to reach below the frost line!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Machine-installed ground screws are usually installed by a professional. Pier foundation<\/h3>\n<p>A pier foundation is the most common way to lay the foundations for leisure buildings and garden buildings. Piers do not require extensive groundworks, and installation is usually easy since the foundation area is small.<\/p>\n<p>Building a garden sauna on piers allows good ventilation under the building. This is a big advantage for moisture control in sauna buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Pier foundation<strong> requires frost insulation<\/strong> whenever the soil is susceptible to frost heave. When the frost insulation is done carefully, a pier foundation is an excellent option even on frost-susceptible soil.<\/p>\n<p>When building on bedrock or sandy soil, no frost insulation is needed. On bedrock, the piers can also be set directly on the rock, and no separate concrete footings are needed to support the foundations.<\/p>\n<p>Based on our experience with more than 1 600 log buildings, most of our customers find that the BCE pier, for example, shown in the picture below, is the easiest way to build the foundations for a garden sauna or sauna cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Suitability:<\/p>\n<p>+ Suitable for all soil types with frost insulation. (Organic material must be removed from underneath and replaced with gravel\/sand.)<br \/>+ A particularly easy solution for frost-stable ground and bedrock.<\/p>\n<h4>Construction:<\/h4>\n<p>+ Inexpensive if you do it yourself.<br \/>+ Good load-bearing capacity, sturdy and durable<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Requires opening up the ground and frost insulation.<br \/>\u2013 Groundworks usually need an excavator, which adds to the cost.<\/p>\n<h4>Options and costs:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>BCE ready-made foundation pier\n<ul>\n<li>The BCE pier is a ready-made concrete pier that widens towards the bottom and needs no separate footing.<\/li>\n<li>An adjustable post base sits on top of the pier.<\/li>\n<li>The price is <strong>approx. 60\u201370 \u20ac each<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Block pier\n<ul>\n<li>A block pier consists of a reinforced concrete footing with pier blocks stacked on top of it. The hollow centre of the pier blocks is reinforced and filled with concrete. An adjustable post base can be added to the block pier during casting.<\/li>\n<li>Price <strong>approx. 30\u201340 \u20ac each<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cast-in-place concrete footing and pier\n<ul>\n<li>The pier can also be cast entirely from concrete on site. In this case, a mould is made for the footing and pier, which is reinforced and filled with concrete. When building foundations for a prefabricated cabin or sauna, pay particular attention to dimensional accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>Prefabricated buildings are made to precise dimensions, and the same is required of the foundations. Otherwise, lowering the sauna or cabin onto the foundations simply will not work.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The dimensions may deviate by no more than \u00b1 20 mm horizontally and \u00b1 5 mm vertically.<\/li>\n<li>If you use adjustable foundation piers, they make it easy to adjust the last few centimetres to the same level.<\/li>\n<li>Check that the foundations are square <strong>by measuring the diagonals<\/strong> \u2013 in other words, once you have made sure that opposite sides of the foundation are equal in length, you also measure that both diagonals* are the same. You can also build the foundations yourself, especially if you have some previous building experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With prefabricated saunas and cabins, you need to be especially careful that the dimensions are accurate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below you will find instructions for building the two most common foundation types yourself.<\/p>\n<h3>Build a pier foundation yourself \u2013 video and step-by-step instructions:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Mark out the position of the building<\/strong> and the level with stakes and string lines. A spirit level and a laser are also useful tools for this.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dig away the topsoil<\/strong> to a depth of at least 50 cm. We recommend an excavator for this stage, but if the building is small and the ground not too difficult, it can be done with a spade.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lay filter fabric at the bottom.<\/strong> The fabric stays between the subsoil and the fill so that the soils do not mix over time.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Put coarse crushed stone<\/strong> \/ gravel in place of the removed soil, in layers of about 15 cm. Use a spade, a rake and a board about 1.5 metres long to help level it.<br \/><br \/><strong>Level and compact<\/strong> the ground carefully. A hand tamper may be enough to compact the ground for a small building, but as a rule we recommend hiring <strong>a plate compactor<\/strong>, to make sure the ground is compacted sufficiently.\n<p>(Ask about hire at hardware stores, for example. The price is usually 40-60\u20ac \/ day).<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Make sure the ground is level<\/strong> using a spirit level or a laser.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Lay insulation boards<\/strong> over the entire building area, extending about 1.5 m beyond the sides of the building. The frost insulation is 10\u201320 cm thick, depending on the climate at the building site.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add 10\u201315 cm of crushed stone on top of the frost insulation<\/strong>. Compact carefully so as not to break the boards (light vibration or compacting by hand is enough).<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Check the levels once more<\/strong> \u2013 in other words, make sure that all the pier positions are at the same level. Use <strong>a laser<\/strong> or <strong>a spirit level<\/strong> and <strong>a string line<\/strong>. Be precise when finishing the ground surface!<br \/><br \/>If you are unsure whether the ground is level enough, use <strong>height-adjustable<\/strong> <strong>foundation piers<\/strong>, so that you can still fine-tune the height afterwards.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li>Cast the footings and piers yourself, or set ready-made foundation piers in place. The number of piles depends on the size and weight of the building. Two people turn the bar round while pressing the screw downwards. Check that it is vertical with a spirit level every now and then during installation. Continue until the screw is below the frost line. (Check the frost depth in your area!)<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>How to install a ground screw foundation by machine.<\/strong><br \/><br \/>Hiring a ground screw machine costs <strong>approx. 80\u20ac\/day<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/>With a machine, a ground screw foundation is quicker and easier to install than by hand. The machine also has more torque if stones get in the screw's way. However, ground screws cannot be installed in ground containing large stones, even by machine.<br \/><br \/><strong>Instructions:<\/strong> First read the machine's operating and safety instructions. Start the machine, place the screw in the chuck and press down while drilling. Check that it is vertical with a spirit level every now and then.
