Here's how to heat a log sauna – the sauna master's step-by-step instructions

  1. Open the bonnet. Ensure the chimney has been swept and the sauna stove's flues cleaned on time. You can read more about sauna maintenance here.
  2. Empty the ash pan. Too much ash can block airflow through the grate and cause the grate to overheat and break.
  3. Put the logs on the sauna stove. Use dry, small pieces of wood and stack them loosely. Fill the nest to no more than half full.
  4. Check that there is sufficient traction. During ignition, the pull-regulating ash damper should be wide open.
  5. Light the fire. Use birch bark, pine cones or fire starters as kindling. It's best to ignite dry, finely chopped wood from the top, ensuring clean and eco-friendly burning from the start. Placing kindling underneath the logs isn't a bad idea either, especially if the logs aren't completely dry.
  6. Add trees. You can use thicker logs than for kindling, and fill the firebox up to a maximum of 2/3 of its height. Ensure adequate draught. When the logs burn cleanly, the door glass will remain clear and the smoke rising from the sauna chimney will be almost colourless. Do not let the fire die down too much, even during sauna use.
  7. Add a few logs to the fire after you've had a sauna. Light post-heating ensures the sauna dries out.

With a sauna master's pro tips, you're guaranteed to succeed and the sauna heater will stay in good condition.

Dry trees are the first important thing. This way the wood ignites more easily and the sauna heats up quickly. The sauna master has a clear view that one should not heat the sauna with damp, musty wood. The type of wood, on the other hand, is not of great importance.

”Many people like to heat the sauna with birch. However, other woods are just as good. Lighter woods simply need to be burned a little more. The total mass of the wood is what matters.”

”You can ensure the wood is dry by bringing it indoors, ideally a couple of days before heating the sauna. This is particularly important in autumn and winter.”

Saunamaister offers for heating a wood-fired sauna pair principle to extend the lifespan of a sauna stove:

”The ash should always be emptied before heating the sauna stove, and the firebox should not be packed too full of wood.”

”It is advisable to keep the veto moderate, especially if you are using birch logs with a high calorific value. Too large a fire will quickly burn out even a good stove.”

After the löyly, the Sauna Master throw a few quid in the pot, so that the sauna stove's heat dries the sauna

”In winter, you can even open the window a little for a while to improve ventilation. And remember to drain the water.”
