We got to take part in a garden sauna project in which a modern garden sauna was built as a birthday surprise for a true sauna lover – Juhani. Through that project, we designed and built an outdoor sauna that had been missing from our range. In this blog post, a few words about that sauna.
Garden sauna design basics
The design of Sauna 10 started from the goal of developing a new garden sauna model for the New Sauna garden sauna range. We wanted to stay true to a clean, modern design language and all-round quality. We wanted the model to have a practical layout and to keep its price below the market average. To guarantee the quality of the garden sauna, the basic model was given 88mm thick laminated log, a Finnish-made Harvia heater and high-quality windows and doors.
We have aimed to ensure a price below the market average by familiar means. Together with the factory, we have focused on ease of manufacture, material compatibility with the other garden saunas in the range, and cost-effective marketing.
The garden sauna surprise was a success
After a few months of using the sauna, we got to interview the birthday boy, Juhani: ”It was a huge surprise when, without the slightest inkling, the garden sauna I had long dreamed of had appeared in the garden while I was away for the weekend”.
Juhani is a seasoned sauna-goer. Since his youth, the sauna has been part of his routine on special days. On ordinary days the sauna has been heated almost daily, and in his free time Juhani has sought out the benches of all kinds of saunas. The one thing Juhani was missing was a garden sauna – but not any more.
Garden sauna experiences
In his calm way, Juhani tells us how, since the garden sauna appeared, friends and acquaintances have been coming over for sauna evenings. ”All in all, the feedback has been incredibly positive and full of praise.” Even on Christmas Eve, a passing jogger had brightened his day with a WhatsApp message asking whether the sauna was warm.
One sauna-goer had noticed how comfortable the sauna room floor felt under bare feet, and wondered how the floor of a garden sauna could be so warm and pleasant even in freezing winter weather, despite the sauna's generous ventilation. The excellent performance of the sauna room had been verified by temperature measurements at different points in the sauna. The design of the heater and the sauna room, correctly stacked stones and the thermally modified floor are probably the secret here.
Many have also praised how well the modern garden sauna blends into the grounds of a detached house built in the '80s. But the most important thing in a sauna is good löyly. ”The best löyly in the world”, as one sauna-goer put it. That is where you'll probably find Juhani in the evenings – looking out at the garden from the sauna room window, and enjoying the löyly.
