Sauna sizing – how to choose or build a suitable sized sauna?

Ethan is the CEO and Sauna Master. Outside of the sauna, he spends his best moments on forest paths, orienteering courses, and the ice hockey rink.

Serious sauna enthusiasts might often bring up an old myth when it comes to sizing the sauna, namely ”the law of steam”, which reads as follows:

”When you sit on the benches, make sure the sauna stones are at the level of your toes and the roof is just within reach of the whisk.”

This is how the importance of sauna dimensions was outlined by a Finnish archaeologist, explorer, and ethnologist Sakari Pälsi (1882-1965).

There's some truth to that. However, myths are made to be shattered, and the rule of the löyly hasn't stood the test of time either, as sauna architecture and stove design has evolved.

So, when sizing a sauna, it's not worth clinging too rigidly to the old ”law.” The main thing is good, soft löyly.

For example, Ethan's garden sauna uses a protective wall that circulates behind the sauna stove, as well as high-quality Harvia sauna stoves. The protective wall heats up as the sauna heater warms up thereby warming the air rising from the floor. This is why your toes are guaranteed not to get cold on the Ehta sauna benches, even if they don't quite reach the level of the stove in all garden saunas.

But what size sauna is good for a family of four, for example? And how high should the sauna ceiling be?

We've compiled a comprehensive information package on sauna dimensions.

When planning a sauna, you should consider the following:* **Size:** The dimensions of the sauna depend on the number of people who will use it simultaneously. A general guideline is to allow at least 60 cm of width and 100 cm of depth per person.* **Height:** The standard ceiling height for a sauna is between 210 cm and 230 cm. This height ensures comfortable seating and adequate air circulation.* **Ventilation:** Proper ventilation is crucial for a safe and enjoyable sauna experience. There should be an inlet vent near the stove and an outlet vent higher up on the opposite wall, or in the ceiling.* **Insulation:** Good insulation is key to maintaining heat and reducing energy consumption. The walls, ceiling, and floor should be properly insulated.* **Wood type:** The choice of wood affects the sauna's aesthetics, longevity, and heat retention. Common choices include pine, spruce, aspen, and alder.* **Stove type and power:** The electric or wood-burning stove should be sized appropriately for the sauna's dimensions. The stove's power output (kW) is a critical factor.* **Lighting:** Sauna lighting should be dim and warm to create a relaxing atmosphere. Consider using special sauna lights that can withstand high temperatures and humidity.* **Location:** The sauna's location should be considered for ease of access, privacy, and potential building regulations.* **Harvia recommends:** It's always a good idea to consult the manufacturer's recommendations, such as those from Harvia, for specific guidance on sauna sizing and equipment.

The best sauna size depends almost entirely on your goals and needs. If you only want a sauna for yourself or your family, a smaller sauna might be sufficient. However, if you plan to host sauna evenings for a large group or might need the sauna for people with mobility issues, a larger sauna is essential.

When sizing a sauna, consider these 5 things

  1. Sauna size Ensure the sauna has enough space to sit and move comfortably. Those who enjoy good löyly (steam) also won't build a sauna that is too low. For example, a target air volume suitable for over 4 people is 15 m.3. Hox! Volume is a different thing to surface area.
  2. Sauna location The sauna's location affects its usability, among other things. The available space can somewhat determine the sauna's size.
  3. Heating solution Choose a suitable heating solution depending on the sauna's size and requirements.
  4. Sauna equipment: Ensure that the sauna's fixtures are considered during the design phase, so that everything necessary fits and fire safety is taken into account (benches, stove, lights, any water buckets, etc.).
  5. Safety Ensure the sauna is safe to use. Read more about choosing a sauna heater and safety here >>

Suitable sauna height

Usually recommended the sauna height is approximately 220-240 cm. This height offers enough space to sit and move comfortably, and also allows for good ventilation. It is also easier to breathe in a higher sauna, as the steam spreads better in the sauna space at that height.

There should be a good gap between the cat and the upper shelf Allow approximately 100-120 cm space. When the sauna's height is optimal, you don't heat unnecessary space, and the sauna isn't too hot or too cold.

Recommended seating area size

For one person The width of the bench planks should be about 60 cm.. This leaves plenty of room around it.

Seat/plank A depth of about 50-60 cm would be good. for a pleasant sauna experience.

What size sauna is suitable?

Saunan mitoitus 1-2 henkilöä

A suitably sized sauna for 1-2 people

A small sauna, with a volume of around 3-5 m³, is usually sufficient for one to two people. Such a sauna can fit comfortably, for example, in a bathroom or a separate sauna room. The volume of a small sauna is comfortably enough for a couple of people and it is also an economically sensible option. However, if you want a sauna where there is room to move and sit, you will need a larger sauna.

See above for examples of base dimensions for a sauna for 1-2 people.

Saunan mitoitus 4-6 henkilöä

A sauna of a suitable size for a family

A family sauna needs more space than a sauna for one or two people. The recommended volume for a family sauna is approximately 6-10 m³. This size of sauna fits well, for example, in a separate sauna room, cellar, garden, or summer cottage. A larger sauna has room to sit and move comfortably, and it also offers the opportunity to organise larger sauna evenings. If there are children in the family, children's safety should also be taken into account.

Saunan mitoitus 7-12 henkilöä

Sauna for a big group

A larger sauna offers more space to sit, move around, and host sauna evenings for a large family or a group of friends. The recommended volume for a large group is at least 15 m³ so that there is enough space for everyone. Such a sauna is suitable, for example, for a separate sauna area, in the garden of a house, or at a summer cottage. However, it should be noted that a larger sauna requires more heating power and is more expensive to purchase.

Here's how you should start planning your sauna's dimensions:

The dimensions of a sauna can seem challenging, but the following steps can help you get started:

  1. Determine your needs and objectives: Consider how often you intend to use the sauna, and how many people will usually be in the sauna.
  2. Find available space: Determine what size sauna will fit in the available space.
  3. Choose a heating solution: Choose a suitable heating solution depending on the size and needs of the sauna. Consider, for example, the heating time of the sauna and the heating method to be used.
  4. Choose your equipment: Choose the necessary sauna equipment, such as benches, lighting, and a stove. Also consider safety and the usability of the sauna.
  5. Design a sauna: Design a sauna, taking into account all the aforementioned factors. Ensure that the sauna is spacious, safe, and functional.
  6. Consult a professional If you are unsure about the sizing of your sauna, consult a professional who can help you design it.
  7. Ready-made or DIY: There are several sauna manufacturers who can supply a sauna on a turnkey basis. If you have the necessary skills, you can also build the sauna yourself.
