Is a building permit needed?

For the time being, a building permit is required for outbuildings of any size that have a fireplace – including garden saunas. According to current estimates, the reform of the Building Act coming into force at the beginning of 2025 will exempt garden saunas under 30 square metres from the building permit procedure.

No changes are coming to the other regulations and restrictions on building garden saunas. For example, building rights and minimum distances must still be observed.
